03 BEHAVIOR PROFILE

Tonal Consistency

Space-dyed yarn is intentionally non-uniform. Lot-to-lot variation in the distribution of tan and clay tones should be expected and accepted as part of the material character.

Drape Character

05 CUT AND SEW GUIDANCE

A Needle: Ballpoint 75/11 to 80/12. Heavy space-dyed jersey benefits from a slightly larger ball point to prevent filament damage.

B Stitch: Four-thread overlock for seams, cover stitch for hems. Balance differential feed to prevent waviness in the elastane-rich fabric.

C Panel Matching: Space-dyed fabric does not permit precise pattern matching. Specify that tonal variation across seams is acceptable, or plan panel placement to minimize contrast at visible joins.

D Relaxation: Allow 24 to 48 hours of open relaxation before cutting. Heavy jersey releases internal tension slowly after unrolling.

E Pressing: Steam lightly from distance. Direct pressing on the jersey face can create shine marks that break the heathered appearance.

F Washing: Cold wash, mild detergent, no chlorine bleach. Elastane and space-dyed yarns both respond poorly to chlorine exposure.

06 BUYER QUESTIONS

Why does the fabric show different tones across the roll?

Space dyeing applies multiple shades to the yarn before knitting, and the distribution of those shades is inherently irregular. This produces the stippled, heathered effect that defines the fabric. Tonal variation is a material characteristic, not a defect, and should be specified as acceptable in purchasing documentation.

Can panels be matched across garment seams?

Precise matching is not feasible with space-dyed fabric. Production planning should either accept visible tonal shifts at seams as part of the design language, or minimize seam visibility by controlling panel layout and seam placement.

Will the sandybrown tone remain consistent between orders?

Space-dyed lots are produced from dyed yarn inventory, so shade continuity depends on yarn lot availability. Retain a physical reference swatch and confirm each production lot against it. Some tonal drift across repeat orders is inherent to the process.

How much shrinkage should be planned after the first wash?

Expect moderate length shrinkage on first laundering. Cutting allowance or pre-shrinking before cutting is recommended for programs with tight finished dimensions. Confirm against your internal wash standard during sampling.

Is 300 GSM suitable for year-round programs?
