How Spandex Fabric Is Made
Spandex Fabric is a synthetic fiber that is extremely flexible and stretchable. It is most commonly used in athletic clothing and swimwear. It can also be found in hosiery, leggings, and underwear. It is very sensitive to heat and must be handled carefully. It is usually woven with other fabrics, and it can be dyed to achieve different colors or styles. The most common color for spandex is white, but it can be produced in other shades as well.
Spandex was developed during World War II by chemists who wanted to find an alternative to rubber. Rubber was used extensively in the war effort and was expensive to produce. The chemists' goal was to create a flexible synthetic replacement for rubber that would be soft and strong. The development of spandex took a long time, and it was not commercialized until 1958.
The manufacturing process for spandex requires a large amount of raw materials, toxic chemicals, and energy. This is because it is petroleum-based and relies on non-renewable fossil fuels. This process is unsustainable and has many negative effects on the environment, including water pollution. The toxic fumes from the chemicals that are used to make this type of fabric can cause many health issues in factory workers, including asthma and lung irritation.
When making this fabric, the first step is to turn raw materials into a substance called polyurethane. This material is made by combining diols and diisocyanates in a chemical reactor. It is then treated with various diamines, which function as chain extenders. This allows the urethane to be stretched. The resulting fibers are then spun into yarns and wound on a spindle. The yarns are then twisted together with the help of a machine and immersed in magnesium stearate, which helps them maintain their shape.
The unique elastic properties of spandex fibers are due to their chemical composition. These fibers consist of multiple polymer strands that have short, rigid segments and long, amorphous segments. In their natural state, these segments intermingle and bond with each other. When force is applied to the fibers, they become elongated and stretchable, but they quickly return to their original length. This makes them able to stretch more than cotton or polyester and is what gives the fabric its unique properties.
When sewing with spandex, it is important to use a stretch needle and a special polyester thread. Cotton threads can rot or become stiff over time, so it is better to stick with polyester. It is also important to use a fabric guide and follow the manufacturer's instructions. If you are a beginner at sewing, it is recommended that you practice on cheaper spandex before trying to sew something with the more expensive stuff.
When washing spandex, it is best to avoid harsh detergents that can damage the fabric. A mild soap is an alternative and can be found at most grocery stores. In addition, adding baking soda to the laundry can reduce odors and prevent rashes. Baking soda is also a natural antiseptic and can discourage odor-causing bacteria.
